The Barkley Marathons, known as one of the most challenging ultramarathons in the world, saw a record number of finishers in its 2024 edition. Five runners, including the first female finisher, crossed the finish line in this year's grueling race.
Ukrainian-Canadian runner Ihor Verys emerged as the overall winner, completing the 100-mile course in an impressive 58 hours, 44 minutes, and 59 seconds. American John Kelly from Tennessee finished second, becoming only the second person to have finished the race within the time limit three times.
Paris, a female runner from the United States, made history as the first woman to complete the Barkley Marathons within the time limit. She finished fifth overall, joining an elite group of athletes who have conquered the infamous race.
Joining the Class of 2024 Barkley Marathons finishers is Jared Campbell, another American runner. Campbell's achievement marks a significant milestone in the race's history.
The Barkley Marathons, held annually in rural Tennessee, is known for its extreme terrain and daunting time limit. Only a handful of runners have ever completed the race, making each finisher a testament to human resilience and determination.
