Hungary Suffers Opening Day Defeat in Euro 2024
Tough Start to Championship Campaign
Switzerland Claims 3-1 Victory
Budapest, Hungary - The Hungarian national football team's Euro 2024 campaign got off to a disappointing start on Saturday, as they fell 3-1 to Switzerland in their opening match.
Despite playing in front of a raucous home crowd, Hungary struggled to find their rhythm and were punished for defensive lapses. Switzerland took the lead in the 15th minute through a Breel Embolo goal and doubled their advantage just before halftime when Granit Xhaka headed home.
Hungary pulled one back early in the second half through a Dominik Szoboszlai penalty, but their hopes of a comeback were dashed when Embolo struck again just minutes later. The Swiss held on to secure the victory and leave Hungary with a mountain to climb in their quest to reach the knockout stages.
The defeat marks a setback for Hungary, who had hoped to make a strong showing on home soil. However, they will need to regroup quickly as they face Portugal in their next Group B fixture on Wednesday.
