Keir Starmer Views On Immigration

Labour's net migration pledge sparks backlash

Starmer accused of pandering to anti-immigration voters after promising to slash numbers

Sir Keir Starmer is facing a backlash from activists and unions after he promised to slash sky-high net migration if Labour wins the election.

The Labour leader has pledged to scrap the government's Rwanda scheme straight away if his party wins the election.

Starmer's pledge has been met with anger from some quarters, who accuse him of pandering to the quarter of the public with the toughest anti-immigration views.

A recent poll found that Starmer's popularity with this group has plummeted since he made his pledge.

Labour has defended its plans to reduce net migration, arguing that the Conservatives have repeatedly broken their promises on the issue.

Sir Keir Starmer arrived in The Hague on Thursday vowing that a Labour government would work more closely with the EU in tackling cross-border crime and illegal immigration.
